Atherley Named ACC Performer of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami’s Michelle Atherley was named ACC Women’s Indoor Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.
A junior from North Port, Fla., Atherley won the women’s pentathlon at the Power 5 Invitational. The 2017 ACC pentathlon champion and All-American had an impressive showing at the University of Michigan, scoring 4,096 points to earn the victory.
“I’m so proud of Michelle and the dedication and determination she has shown to get back to this point,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “It was a very solid opener for her and has given her so much confidence moving forward.”
Atherley opened the day with the fastest time in the 60m hurdles, winning section 3 at 8.56 seconds. She posted a season-best mark of 12.13m to finish second in the shot put and was second in the long jump with a mark of 5.70m. Atherley closed out the pentathlon with a third-place finish in the 800m, posting a time of 2:17.53. The 2017 ACC champion in the pentathlon currently has the top pentathlon score in the conference and is ranked 10th in the NCAA.
This is the first ACC weekly award of Atherley’s career. She is the second Hurricane to earn an ACC Performer of the Week honor this season, joining freshman Hasani Knight.
Atherley and the Canes are back in action this weekend, traveling to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
