Canes to Open Spring Slate at Florida Challenge

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s golf team returns to the course for the first time this spring as they travel to Lecanto, Fla., on Monday to compete in the Florida Challenge. This year’s event will take place at the Par-72, 6,039 yard Black Diamond Ranch Quarry Course.
 
THE BASICS
-Tee time will begin at 7:45 a.m. on Monday.
-The tournament will consist of 36 holes.
-The tournament will be split into two rounds.
-Live scoring for the tournament will be available at Golfstat.com.
 
A COMPETITIVE FIELD
The Florida Challenge will feature six Florida schools in a showcase of the sunshine state’s top golfers.
 
Miami will be competing against the following teams (rankings based on Golfstat.com).
 
No. 18 Florida, FIU, Jacksonville, Kentucky, Louisville, UCF and USF.
 
LAST TIME OUT: WEBER CONTINUES TO FINISH STRONG
Junior Dewi Weber paced the Hurricanes for the third straight tournament last fall after she posted a final round score of 77 to finish the 2017 Betsy Rawls Invitational tied for 18th. She posted her 19th career top-20 finish.
 
As a team, Miami took eighth with a three-round score of 903 and a final round score of 317 to close its fall schedule.
 
THE WORD ON THE CANES
-Miami will tee it up for the first time this spring.
-Miami enters the Florida Challenge after placing eighth in Betsy Rawls Invite field consisting of seven Golfweek preseason top-30 teams.
-The Hurricanes enter the spring in the hopes of earning a third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship.
-Miami earned a trip to the NCAA Championship for the 25th time in program history in 2017.
-The Hurricanes tied for 16th at the 2017 NCAA Championship. Miami’s finish in the NCAA Championship was its 10th top-20 finish in tournament history. The Hurricanes’ finish also was their best since the 1992 appearance when they placed 10th.
-Miami returns three starters from last year’s NCAA lineup, including Dewi WeberRenate Grimstad, and Macarena Aguilera.
-Hurricane freshmen Kristyna Frydlova and Roos Haarman made their respective collegiate debuts last fall at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla.
 
THE LINEUP
Macarena Aguilera
-Aguilera tied for 60th at the Betsy Rawls Invite.
-Finished the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in 45th place.
-Logged her first career hole-in-one at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate. 
-Posted a second-round 70 at the Schooner Fall Classic – her second lowest round of her collegiate career.
-Competed in 10 events during her freshman season in 2016-17.
-Her best finish of the year came at the 2017 Florida Challenge as she tied for 24th.
-Saw action at the 2017 ACC, NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship events. 
 
Kristyna Frydlova
-Tied for 31st at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Placed 48th last fall at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
-Tied for 26th at the Schooner Fall Classic thanks to a pair of rounds fewer than 70.
-Made her collegiate debut on Sept. at the Schooner Fall Classic.
-Arrives in Miami with an extensive amount of international experience.
-Captured the 2013 and 2015 Czech International Under 18 Championships.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s team.
 
Renate Grimstad
-Tied for 28th in the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Posted her fourth top-15 finish of her career last week at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
-Tied for 63rd in her first tournament of the year at the Schooner Fall Classic on Sept. 25.
-Saw action in 12 events during her freshman season.
-Posted a scoring average of 74.66 in 35 rounds during the 2016-17 season.
-Notched three top 10 performances a year ago, including an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Regional.
-Her best finish of 2016-17 came at the UCF Challenge, as she tied for third.
 
Roos Haarman
-Tied for 60th at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Finished in 60th place last week at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
-Made her collegiate debut at the Schooner Fall Classic on Sept. 23.
-Captured the 2016 Dutch National Open Championship.
-Captured her first amateur championship crown during the 2014 Faldo Series.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s team.
 
Dewi Weber
-Tied for 18th in the 2017 Betsy Rawls Invitational for her 19th career top-20 finish.
-Captured medalist honors at the 2016 Betsy Rawls Invitational with a three-round total of 201, posting rounds of 64-65-72=201.
-Tied for seventh last week at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
-Tied for fourth to open the year at the Schooner Fall Classic on Sept. 25.
-Has posted 20 rounds of 70-or-fewer.
-Selected as a 2017 Golfweek Preseason All-American.
-Has posted 13 career top 10 finishes.
-Earned WGCA Second Team All-America honors as a sophomore.
-Posted a team-best 71.9 strokes per round average during the 2016-17 season.
 
Serena Hou
-Will make her Miami debut at the Florida Challenge.
-Will compete as an individual at the Florida Challenge.
