Perez-Somarriba Named ACC Player of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team has earned the first ACC Player of the Week distinction of 2018, as announced Tuesday evening by the conference.
Perez-Somarriba turned in a perfect 3-0 record in singles in the Miami Spring Invite and a 2-1 mark in doubles to open the year. The ACC accolade is the first of her already illustrious career.
“This, of course, is a nice honor in a conference saturated with great players,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “It’s based on last week’s play, but it’s important we now look forward with many big weeks still to come.”
A sophomore ranked No. 36 nationally in singles, Perez-Somarriba’s ledger included a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory over fourth-ranked Fernanda Contreras of second-ranked Vanderbilt.
For Perez-Somarriba, the triumph was the second of her career against a top-five opponent and matched the highest-ranked opponent she has defeated.
The Madrid native also cruised to a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory against Olivia Sneed of No. 13 Ohio State and topped No. 21 Kentucky’s Mami Adachi, 6-2, 6-3.
Paired with junior Ana Madcur, Perez-Somarriba also logged a top-20 win in doubles, taking down No. 19 Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt, 6-2.
In addition, Perez-Somarriba and Madcur downed the Buckeye duo of Shiori Fukuda and Anna Sanford, 6-3.
A 2017 NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist and ITA All-American, Perez-Somarriba helped No. 19 Miami post a 28-8 mark on opening weekend, including a 20-4 tally in singles.
