CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 15/17 Miami men’s basketball team returns home at 6 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 7) when it takes on No. 24 Florida State at the sold-out Watsco Center. ESPNU will televise the game, while WZAB 880-AM will air the radio broadcast. The game also will stream online through the WatchESPN app.
Miami (12-2, 1-1 ACC) is ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 17 in the USA Today Coaches Poll this week and begins a stretch of three straight games against ranked opponents. The Hurricanes concluded a six-game road swing Wednesday with a 64-54 defeat at Georgia Tech, concluding their trip with a 4-2 record.
The Hurricanes have played just five home games this season – fewest in the ACC. UM is playing its first home game since Dec. 5 and is 5-0 on its home floor this season.
Miami is averaging 73.4 points per game while its defense is limiting its opponents to 58.9 points per game. UM ranks second nationally to Virginia (52.7) in scoring defense. Miami has held its foes to 36.9 percent shooting from the field, which is fifth-best nationally, and 27 percent shooting from 3-point range, which is best in the ACC and third-lowest nationally.
Center Dewan Huell leads Miami in scoring at 13.4 points per game and also is grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game. Guard Bruce Brown Jr. is averaging 10.9 points per game, as well as a team-high 7.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.
Florida State (12-2, 1-1) has faced a tough start the ACC schedule, falling 100-93 at No. 2 Duke last Saturday before scoring an 81-80 home win over No. 12 North Carolina on Wednesday. The Seminoles are averaging 85.4 points per game and allowing 68.4 per game. Terance Mann leads four players in double figures at 14.8 points per game.
FSU leads the all-time series with Miami, 45-34, but the Hurricanes own a 27-13 games on their home floor. FSU won both meetings last season, 75-57 on Feb. 1 in Coral Gables and 66-57 on March 4 in Tallahassee, Fla.
Miami travels to No. 25 Clemson for a 3 p.m. game next Saturday (Jan. 13) before coming home the following Monday to play No. 2 Duke in a 7 p.m. game at the Watsco Center.
