Women’s Tennis Starts 2018 Ranked No. 19

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team is No. 19 nationally in the Oracle/ITA rankings to open the 2018 spring season, as announced Wednesday.

This is the 16th consecutive year the Hurricanes begin the spring ranked in the top 25, a stretch that dates back to 2003, head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ second at the helm. It is also the 14th year in a row Miami is in the top 20 of the year-opening rankings.

The Hurricanes are one of four ACC teams in the top 20, along with fifth-ranked North Carolina, seventh-ranked Georgia Tech and ninth-ranked Duke.

Miami is coming off a 15th straight top-25 finish a year ago, as well as a 16th consecutive appearance in the second round of the NCAA Team Championship.

Yaroshuk-Tews’ team features two singles player who closed the 2017 fall season nationally-ranked, in sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba and senior Sinead Lohan. The pair, both of whom have made NCAA Singles Championship semifinal appearances, sit at No. 36 and No. 41, respectively.

The Hurricanes start their 2018 campaign Jan. 19-21 when they host the Miami Spring Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The field also features second-ranked Vanderbilt, No. 13 Ohio State and No. 21 Kentucky.
