CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 15 Miami men’s basketball team finishes off a long road swing Wednesday when it visits Georgia Tech for a 9 p.m. matchup at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. The ACC’s Regional Sports Networks have the broadcast, including FOX Sports Florida in South Florida and FOX Sports Sun in Central and North Florida. WQAM 560-AM has the local radio broadcast, while the game also streams online through the WatchESPN app (subject to blackout).
Miami (12-1, 1-0 ACC) is concluding a six-game road swing, which began Dec. 16 at George Washington and encompassed approximately 15,550 miles of travel. The Hurricanes are 4-1 thus far on the trip, including a 67-53 win at Pitt last Saturday in the ACC opener.
Miami is 4-0 in true road games this year, matching the Hurricanes’ total number of road wins from the 2016-17 season.
Miami is averaging 74.8 points per game while its defense is limiting its opponents to 58.5 points per game and 36.8 percent shooting, each of which ranks second in the ACC. UM ranks third nationally behind only Virginia (52.8) and Texas Tech (58.2) in scoring defense. The Canes also are limiting their foes to 27.6 percent shooting from 3-point range, which is lowest in the ACC and fifth-lowest nationally.
Dewan Huell leads Miami in scoring at 13.5 points per game and also is grabbing 6.3 rebounds per game. Bruce Brown Jr. is averaging 11.1 points per game as well as a team-high 7.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game and DJ Vasiljevic is averaging 10.8 points per game, while Ja’Quan Newton has scored 10.2 points per game and needs five points to reach 1,000 for his career.
Coming off a 68-59 loss at Notre Dame last Saturday, Georgia Tech (6-7, 0-1) is averaging 66.5 points per game and giving up 65.1 per contest. Josh Okogie has returned from an injury and leads the team in scoring at 18.0 per game. Tadric Jackson (15.8), Jose Alvarado (13.0) and Ben Lammers (12.8) also are averaging in double figures. Lammers also averages 8.8 rebounds per contest.
Miami leads the series with Georgia Tech, 13-8, including 12-6 since the Hurricanes joined the ACC for the 2004-05 season. The Hurricanes have won the last two meetings, including a 75-68 triumph on Feb. 7, 2016, in their last trip to Atlanta, and 70-61, on Feb. 15, 2017, in Coral Gables. Miami is 7-4 all-time in road games at Georgia Tech and has won its last five games in Atlanta.
Miami returns home Sunday for a 6 p.m. game against No. 24 Florida State at the Watsco Center. ESPNU has the television broadcast. It marks the Canes’ first home game since Dec. 5.
