Hurricanes Continue Excellence in the Classroom
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami student-athletes continued their strong work in the classroom this past year, posting a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 91 percent, as announced Wednesday by the NCAA.
The Hurricanes’ GSR is above the national average of 86 percent. Miami also is tied for the 13th–best GSR among football bowl subdivision institutions.
“I could not be more proud of our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff for once again exceeding the graduation success rate national average,” Director of Athletics Blake James said. “This data shows the strong commitment to academic achievement at the University of Miami.”
The Miami men’s diving and women’s golf teams continued their consistent perfection with 100 percent GSR for the 13th consecutive year.
The Hurricane volleyball and women’s swimming and diving programs also continued their string of success in the classroom, earning a 100 percent GSR for the sixth straight season.
Rounding out Miami’s perfect GSR numbers in 2017 was the soccer and men’s cross country and track and field programs. The Hurricane soccer program earned a perfect rating for the second consecutive season, while the men’s cross country and track and field programs earned its first 100 percent rating since 2010.
“This is an extraordinary accomplishment for our Hurricane student-athletes, coaches and staff members,” Senior Associate AD for Academic Services David Wyman said. “We are very proud of our graduation success rate and the individuals, who continue to strive for excellence.”
In addition, the Miami football (88 percent), men’s basketball (92 percent), women’s basketball (92 percent) and baseball (83 percent) programs all posted GSR totals above the NCAA average.
The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2007-2008 through 2010-11, comprising more than 110,000 student-athletes.
The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents suggesting that graduation data more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained. The NCAA began compiling the GSR with the entering class of 1995.
