Two Canes to Compete at ITA Fall Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Sinead Lohan and Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team will take part in the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, beginning Wednesday.

Held in Southern California, the tournament replaced the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships as the final major event of the fall season and features many of the best collegiate players in the country.

Matches will take place at the elite Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif., and the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif.

Both Lohan, a senior ranked eighth nationally, and Perez-Somarriba, a sophomore who checks in at No. 11, will be competing in the 64-player singles draw. Both players are seeded in the top 10 with, Lohan seventh and Perez-Somarriba ninth.

Lohan earned an automatic bid by winning the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, while Perez-Somarriba was selected for an at-large bid among the pool of eligible candidates. Lohan enters the tournament with 109 victories in her career, one shy of Audrey Bañada for fourth place on Miami’s all-time wins list.

Wednesday’s action is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET and play will run for five days. Each player is guaranteed at least two matches.
