Canes Golf Faces Strong Field at Annika Intercollegiate
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s golf team returns to the course for the second consecutive week and will take part in 2017 ANNIKA Intercollegiate, beginning Sunday in Eden Prairie, Minn. This year’s event will be held at the par 72, 6,288-yard Olympic Hills Golf Club.
THE BASICS
-Tee times will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The remaining tee times will be determined after competition concludes on Sunday and Monday.
-The tournament will feature a 54-hole event.
-Each round will consist of 18 holes.
-The format will be five players in the starting lineup for each team, with the top four scores counting toward the team total.?
-Live scoring for the tournament will be available at Golfstat.com.
A COMPETITIVE FIELD
The ANNIKA Intercollegiate will be one of the toughest tournaments the Hurricanes will compete in this season. The ANNIKA Intercollegiate was ranked as the nation’s top women’s tournament by Golfweek, during the 2016-17 season.
The 12-school field includes nine teams in the top-13 of Golfweek’s preseason rankings. Miami, which was tabbed No. 27, will be competing against No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 Furman, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 9 Georgia, No. 10 Southern Cal, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Florida State, No. 13 South Carolina, Baylor and tournament host Minnesota.
LAST TIME OUT: WEBER SHINES AT THE #SCHOONER17
University of Miami women’s golfer Dewi Weber wasted little time this season in adding to her already impressive collegiate résumé on Sept. 25, as she tied for fourth at the 2017 Schooner Fall Classic.
The Hurricane junior concluded final round competition with a four-under-par, 67, and closed the tournament with total of 207, finishing just seven strokes behind individual medalist Kristen Gillman from Alabama.
Weber’s final round 67 marked the 19th time in her career she has posted a score of 70-or-fewer.
Weber’s top-five finish was the ninth of her Hurricane career. It also marked the second straight year the Netherlands native has opened the year with a top-five performance. In 2016, Weber captured medalist honors at the Mary Fossum Invitational.
As a team, Miami finished 10th with a three-round total of 863. The Hurricanes posted a Day 3 total of 285 – their lowest single team round of the tournament.
THE WORD ON THE CANES
-Miami will tee it up for the second time this fall.
-The Hurricanes’ trip to Minnesota will be the second of three tournaments Miami will compete in this fall.
-Miami enters the Annika Intercollegiate after it placed 10th at the 2017 Schooner Fall Classic to open the year.
-The Hurricanes enter the 2017-18 season in the hopes of earning a third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship.
-Miami earned a trip to the NCAA Championship for the 25th time in program history in 2017.
-The Hurricanes tied for 16th at the 2017 NCAA Championship. Miami’s finish in the NCAA Championship was its 10th top-20 finish in tournament history. The Hurricanes’ finish also was their best since the 1992 appearance when they placed 10th.
-Miami returns three starters from last year’s NCAA lineup, including Dewi Weber, Renate Grimstad and Macarena Aguilera.
-Hurricane freshmen Kristyna Frydlova and Roos Haarman made their respective collegiate debuts last week for Miami.
THE LINEUP
Macarena Frydlova
-Tied for 61st in her first tournament of the year.
-Posted a second-round 70 at the Schooner Fall Classic – her second lowest round of her collegiate career.
-Competed in 10 events during her freshman season in 2016-17.
-Her best finish of the year came at the Florida Challenge as she tied for 24th.
-Saw action at the 2017 ACC, NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship events.
Kristyna Frydlova
-Tied for 26th at the Schooner Fall Classic.
-Posted a pair of rounds under 70.
-Made her collegiate debut last week at the Schooner Fall Classic.
-Arrives in Miami with an extensive amount of international experience.
-Captured the 2013 and 2015 Czech International Under 18 Championships.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s team.
Renate Grimstad
-Tied for 63rd in her first tournament of the year.
-Saw action in 12 events during her freshman season.
-Posted a scoring average of 74.66 in 35 rounds during the 2016-17 season.
-Notched three top 10 performances a year ago, including an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Regional.
-Her best finish of 2016-17 came at the UCF Challenge, as she tied for third.
Roos Haarman
-Made her collegiate debut last week at the Schooner Fall Classic.
-Tied for 63rd in her first tournament of the year.
-Captured the 2016 Dutch National Open Championship.
-Captured her first amateur championship crown during the 2014 Faldo Series.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s team.
Dewi Weber
-Tied for fourth last week at the Schooner Fall Classic.
-Has posted 19 rounds of 70-or-fewer.
-Selected as a 2017 Golfweek Preseason All-American.
-Has posted 12 career top 10 finishes.
-Earned WGCA Second Team All-America honors as a sophomore.
-Posted a team-best 71.9 strokes per round average during the 2016-17 season.
