WBB Q&A: Freshman Taylor Mason

WBB Q&A: Freshman Taylor Mason

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – One of two newcomers to the University of Miami women’s basketball team from the Peach State, 5-foot-9-inch freshman guard Taylor Mason has been at The U for several weeks already.

A consensus top-100 recruit out of Decatur, Ga., and Norcross High School, Mason spent some time with HurricaneSports.com to discuss a variety of topics, including her academic interests and why she picked Miami . . .

Q: You are about a month into your time at Miami. How has it been?

A: It’s been pretty good. A lot of adjusting, but I’m doing pretty well.

Q: What has been your favorite part?

A: My favorite part has been going to coach [Katie Meier’s] house as a team and having a little team dinner, just chilling and watching the NBA Draft. I had a good time.

Q: Is there anything that has been kind of surprising or unexpected to you so far?

A: No, not really, not at all. I guess I won’t get any surprises until the season starts. So, I’m trying to prepare myself for those surprises.

Q: How would you describe your game?

A: I’m very aggressive and I’m not necessarily [just] a shooter, but I’m a pull-up type of shooter or an attacking the rack type [of player]. I’m a dog. That’s how I would describe my game.

Q: What would you say is the part of your game you need to work on the most?

A: Jump shot, but that’s coming. It depends. You won’t necessarily catching me shooting many threes, but my pull-up right now is what I’m working on because that is what I’m going to need in the ACC.

Q: Do you have any players who you try to look up to and model your game after or whom you just enjoy watching?

A: I love Maya Moore and I love LeBron James.

Q: Why them?

A: Because my game and their games have a lot of similarities and those two are my favorites. Maya Moore is the female LeBron James.

Q: Have you thought at all about what you want to major in and, if so, what have you decided on?

A: Yes, I have decided and I would like to major in psychology and minor in business finance and take it from there.

Q: Why are those appealing to you?

A: I’ve always wanted to study the human mind. Why do people do what they do? I always want reasoning, so I decided to study the human mind.

Q: When you think back on it, what made you decide Miami was the spot for you?

A: I decided on Miami because of, first of all, the coaching staff. Out of all the coaches that I ran into throughout my process, Miami’s seemed to fit me the best. With my style of game and the style of coaching that coach Katie has, it was the best fit for me. The coaching staff has a good heart and they’re good people in general, so I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, to be honest.
