Canes Honored by CSCAA for Classroom Work
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming & diving program was among those recognized by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches of Association of America (CSCAA) for excellence in the classroom, the organization announced Wednesday.
Recognized as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, the Miami Hurricanes posted a team GPA of 3.52 this past spring, marking the second-highest GPA in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the 11th-highest among all schools in “Power Five” conferences.
The team’s GPA also was tied for the highest of any school in the state of Florida.
“The student-athletes in this program continue to amaze me,” head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said. “To come together from all over the world, set a team goal of achieving a GPA higher than 3.5, and to go out and do it is a testament to their determination and discipline, as well as the athletic department’s commitment to academic services and success.”
In addition, five student-athletes – Angela Algee, Wally Layland, Marcela Maric, Julia Schippert and Roxanne Yu – were honored as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.
The selections recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
“Combining their success in the classroom with the high reputation of the University of Miami academics and the excellence they display in the pool is quite an accomplishment,” Kershaw said.
Algee, Layland and Maric took home Scholar All-America honors, while Schippert and Yu were named Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans.
“Between the athletic and academic components required to receive the award, these really are some of the best of the best,” CSCAA Executive Director Joel Shinofield said.
