Five Canes to Compete at National Championships
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Five members of the University of Miami track and field program will compete against their country’s best athletes this weekend.
Shakima Wimbley will race at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships, while Erika Voyzey, Brandon Taylor and Sherry Lubin are set to compete at the 2017 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships. Both competitions will be held in Sacramento, Calif., from June 22-25. Additionally, Henri Delauze will compete at the Bahamian National Championships on June 23-24.
Wimbley will be the top collegian in a loaded women’s 400m field that features Olympians Natasha Hastings and Phyllis Francis. Her qualifying time of 50.40 seconds ranks sixth among entrants heading into the competition. Wimbley, who was the 2017 NCAA indoor champion in the 400m and was the national runner-up outdoors, will begin competition at 7:20 p.m., on Thursday.
Taylor will compete in the junior men’s 100m, beginning Thursday at 6:35 p.m. A native of Friendswood, Texas, Taylor had an impressive debut season for the Hurricanes. As a freshman, he was part of Miami’s 4x400m relay that reached the NCAA East Preliminary. His season-best time of 10.60 seconds ranked 14th in the ACC in 2017.
Lubin is in the women’s junior shot put field that will compete at 3:20 p.m., on Friday. As a freshman, Lubin finished 11th at the ACC Outdoor Championships with a mark of 13.68m, but her season-best throw of 14.56m ranked 10th in the conference.
Voyzey will be the last Hurricane to begin competition, jumping in the women’s junior high jump at 4 p.m., on Saturday. The freshman was third at the ACC Outdoor Championships in the high jump with a mark of 1.73m, and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in the event. Her season-best mark of 1.75m ranked third in the ACC in 2017.
Delauze will race in the men’s 400m at the Bahamian national meet. The junior was one of the top men in the ACC in his event, ranking fifth in the conference with a season-best time of 46.75 seconds. An NCAA East Preliminary qualifier in the 400m and the 4x400m relay, Delauze placed fifth in the 400m at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
