@CanesTrack Ready for Tom Jones Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team will wrap up the 2017 outdoor track and field regular season Friday at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational.
The Hurricanes will be in action on Friday at Percy Beard Track on the University of Florida campus for the second time this season after previously competing at the Florida Relays from March 29-April 1. The Tom Jones Memorial Invitational will feature a talented field of Division I teams that includes Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Coastal Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, Miami, North Carolina A&T, North Florida, South Florida and UCF.
Action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with the men’s hammer, women’s discus and women’s pole vault. Running events are set to kick off at 1 p.m., with the women’s 100m hurdles preliminaries.
Miami’s 25th-ranked women’s team will look to close the regular season with its best marks to date, as senior standouts Shakima Wimbley Ebony Morrison and Aiyanna Stiverne will look to lead the team in Gainesville. Wimbley will look to improve on her ACC-leading 200m time of 22.67 seconds that currently is tied for sixth in the NCAA this season.
Morrison posted an ACC-best time of 13.01 seconds in the 100m hurdles a week ago, but the senior will try to continue to lower her time in preparation for the upcoming ACC Championships. Stiverne will look to make a big move up the conference rankings, after opening up 19th in the ACC in the 400m a week ago.
On the men’s side, Carlos Mangum is poised for another strong competition in the men’s hammer throw. The senior currently sits third in the ACC and 22nd in the NCAA with a mark of 66.87m.
Sprinters Isaiah Taylor and Brandon Taylor are two other Canes to watch in the men’s 100m. Isaiah Taylor ranks seventh in the ACC with a time of 10.56 seconds, while Brandon Taylor is 13th with a time of 10.60 seconds.
Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will prepare for the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships. Hosted by Georgia Tech, the 2017 ACC meet is scheduled for May 12-14. To view the complete Miami track and field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
