Lomacki, Flores and Andrews Rise in the ITA Rankings
CORAL GABLES, FLA. – University of Miami men’s tennis junior Piotr Lomacki rose five spots in the latest ITA singles rankings, released Tuesday, rising to the No. 46 position.
Playing No. 1, Lomacki is 10-6 during his junior campaign, earning a quartet of victories against fellow ranked opponents. In non-conference play, the junior defeated then-No. 51 Jack Findel-Hawkins of North Florida, 6-1, 6-1, before taking down Minnesota’s then-No. 68 Matic Spec, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Last weekend against North Carolina, the native of Poland defeated then-No. 19 Ronnie Schneider, 7-5, 6-4.
Sunday, with the overall match tied at three points apiece, Lomacki found himself in a battle against Notre Dame’s Josh Hagar, then-ranked No. 54 in the nation. The junior defeated Hagar in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, as Miami earned its second consecutive ACC victory.
Joining Lomacki for the second week in a row, seniors Max Andrews and Jesse Flores ascended 16 spots in the latest ITA doubles rankings, forming the No. 40 doubles tandem in the country.
A week removed from taking down the nation’s top-ranked doubles team, the Hurricane duo has now won three straight matches after earning a pair of victories this past weekend, beginning with Boston College’s Derek Austin and Hank Workman, 6-3, on Friday.
On Sunday against Notre Dame, Flores and Andrews faced off against then-No. 24 Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar. After falling behind early, 0-2, the seniors rallied back to seal the doubles point for UM with a 6-3 win.
This weekend the Hurricanes (8-9, 2-6 ACC) will return to the state of North Carolina, playing in their final scheduled road matches of the season. The trip opens in Raleigh, N.C., April 14, the Canes will take on NC State at 2:30 p.m. Miami will wrap up the weekend when it faces No. 46 Duke April 15 at 3 p.m., in Durham, N.C.
