Mangum Sets UM Record at Hurricane Alumni Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Carlos Mangum made the most of his final opportunity to compete at Cobb Stadium as a member of the University of Miami track and field team.
The senior placed third in the men’s hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 66.87m that broke his previous school record of 65.08m. Mangum, who holds the hammer throw and weight throw records at Miami, was the top collegian in the men’s hammer field. Fellow senior Karyna Armstrong finished seventh in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 50.34m.
“It was a great hammer competition to have some of the best in the world here and then to see Carlos seize the moment and step up and get excited in the competition was great,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “I’m really excited for him. He’s been working hard and for it to com ein a meet like today that’s his last h ome meet with that kind of competition is great.”
Amy Taintor closed out the opening day of the women’s heptathlon in first place with 3,175 points. The junior opened the day finishing second in the 100m hurdles with a career-best time of 14.70 seconds. She followed with a mark of 1.65m in the high jump and posted a mark of 11.35m in the shot put. Taintor closed the day with a personal-best time of 25.07 seconds in the 200m.
“Amy loves to compete at home,” Deem said, “It’s been a big weekend for her to PR in three of her four events today. I look for her to have a big day tomorrow and I look for her to have a big day tomorrow. I love home meets and I am excited to see where we are at this weekend.”
Andreas Christodoulou wrapped up the first half of the men’s decathlon in third place with 3,635 points. The sophomore began his competition with a time of 11.31 seconds in the 100m and followed with a mark of 6.87m in the long jump. Christodoulou posted a personal-best throw of 12.78m in the shot put and a mark of 1.82m in the high jump before closing the day with a time of 51.18 seconds in the 400m.
Kyra Maryland won the women’s high jump with a season-best mark of 1.65m, while Celine Thompson finished tied for third with a personal-best mark of 1.65m.
The annual Hurricane Alumni Invitational is the last of three home meets for the Miami track and field team in 2017 and it features a talented field of teams in action. In addition to the host Hurricanes, fellow ACC schools Pitt and Syracuse, as well as, UConn, Buffalo, Northeastern, Quinnipiac, FIU, FAU, FGCU, Nova Southeastern, Lynn and Florida Memorial will be competing at Cobb Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
Saturday will feature an action-packed schedule, beginning with the decathlon at 9 a.m., and the heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. Running events are set to begin with the women’s 4x100m relay at 2 p.m., while the field events open at 3 p.m., with the women’s discus, men’s shot put and men’s and women’s long jump. The senior ceremony is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete at the Michael Johnson Invitational. To view the complete Miami track and field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
