Varsity 8 Leads Rowing at Governor’s Cup
FELLSMERE, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing earned a pair of victories at the 2017 Governor’s Cup Saturday morning.
The Hurricanes had six boats in action at Canal 54, facing off against Columbia, Florida Tech and Barry University, but it was Miami’s varsity 8 that led the way with for the Canes.
“The team had a good day of racing to close out spring break,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “There was solid progression through the racing and each boat picked up a little speed from race to race. The 1v boat led the day with a solid race over Columbia and stronger row later against FIT. I see lots more potential for the entire team to pick up much more speed and I’m excited for them to achieve it.”
The varsity 8 was the first boat in the water for the Canes, beating Columbia in a head-to-head race with a time of 6:45.90. The varsity 8 earned its second victory of the day in the second section of racing, beating Florida Tech and Miami’s 2V8+. The varsity 8 posted a time of 6:50.50 in the second session, while the 2V8+ finished third with a time of 7:06.27.
The Canes’ 2V8+ finished second in its morning race with a time of 7:11.47 and Miami’s 3V8+ ‘A’ was third in that race with a time of 7:56.84.
The Hurricanes’ 1V4+ finished behind Columbia with a time of 8:13.54, while the Canes 2V4+ was second to Columbia with a time of 8:16.97.
The Canes’ 3V8+ ‘B’ finished second to Florida Tech in a head-to-head race with a time of 7:16.11 to conclude the day’s action.
Following this weekend’s action at the Governor’s Cup, the Canes will head to Sarasota, Fla., for the Sunshine State Invite on March 31 and April 1. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
