@CanesWTennis to Host Third-Ranked Tar Heels

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team will take on its fifth top-20 opponent in just its first 10 matches of the season when it faces third-ranked North Carolina Friday afternoon.

No. 29 Miami is set to play the Tar Heels at 4 p.m., at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. North Carolina is also the second top-five opponent of the year for the Hurricanes.

Miami has a 14-13 all-time record against North Carolina, including a 6-3 mark in home matches. In the most recent meeting, the Tar Heels earned a 4-2 win in the ACC Championship final on April 24, 2016.

Heading into Saturday’s contest, Miami (4-5, 3-1 ACC) has two players who are nationally-ranked in singles, as junior Sinead Lohan is seventh on the ITA’s list and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba checks in at No. 66.

North Carolina has a 16-1 (3-0 ACC) record thus far in 2017 and has won eight matches in a row. The Tar Heels feature five players in the ITA’s national singles rankings, including two in the top five. Hayley Carter is ranked second and Sara Daavettila follows her in the fourth spot. Additionally, Jessie Aney is No. 24, Alexa Graham is No. 33 and Makenna Jones is No. 78.

In doubles, Aney and Carter form the top-ranked pair in the country, while Carter also teams with Daavettila in the No. 40 spot and Aney also pairs with Cassandra Vazquez at No. 68.

Thursday’s match will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra HERE, as a part of the USTA’s College MatchDay series. It is one of nine matches, men’s or women’s, that are included in the series, including one of just three played outside the USTA National Campus and the lone women’s one in that group.
