Dinsmore Caps Dominant Week for Miami Divers

AUBURN, Ala. – University of Miami redshirt freshman David Dinsmore capped a dominant week by Hurricanes divers at Zone B qualifying with a brilliant performance in the platform to secure his trip to the 2017 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

Less than a month after capturing his first conference gold medal at the ACC Championships, Dinsmore finished with a robust first-place score of 940.55 to punch his ticket to NCAAs in his signature 10-meter event.

Dinsmore’s score was nearly 200 points better than second-place finisher Scott Lazeroff of Auburn (743.40).

“David took care of business today,” head diving coach Randy Ableman said. “He picked up where he left off at ACCs with another world-class performance.”

It was the second straight major meet where Dinsmore dominated the competition; his first-place score at the ACC Championships in Atlanta (517.65) was well ahead of second-place Dylan Grisell of Florida State (391.95).

“This was another confidence booster heading into the NCAA Championships,” Ableman said. “It’s going to be a war, and we’ll be ready.”

Dinsmore became the fourth Hurricane diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships at the Martin Aquatics Center. Miami won four of the six diving events at Zone B qualifying in an eye-opening week Center on the Auburn University campus.

Both Dinsmore and junior Briadam Herrera, who won both the 1-meter and 3-meter Zone qualifiers earlier in the week, will take part in the NCAA Men’s Championships from March 22-25.

Junior Wally Layland and freshman Marcela Maric will both compete at the NCAA Women’s Championships (March 15-18); Layland will compete in both springboard events, while Maric will take part in the 1-meter.

Senior swimmer Angela Algee will return to the NCAA Championships to compete in the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle.
