@CanesRowing Shines at Head of the Charles
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The University of Miami rowing team had four boats in action at the prestigious 2016 Head of the Charles this weekend.
The Hurricanes had two entries in the Women’s Club 4+ event on Saturday and one boat in the Women’s Club 8+. The Canes also had one entry in the Championship 4+ event on Sunday.
Miami’s entry in the Women’s Club 8+ was the Hurricanes’ top finishing boat on Saturday, placing 11th in a field of 39 boats. Coxed by Lily Wittle, the Hurricanes’ Club 8+ entry of Halle Alitz, Alex Gunner, Kristen Klein, Katarzyna Pasternak, Catherine Tayler, Elise Wiley, Alexa Aguilar and Katie Robinson combined for a time of 17:45.374.
The Canes also had two boats race in the Women’s Club 4+ event that featured 59 entries. Miami’s Club 4+ ‘A’ boat finished 20th with a time of 20:36.687, while Miami ‘B’ placed 46th with a time of 21:58.437.
“It was a good day of racing here in Boston with all three boats racing with all they had out on the course,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said following Saturday’s action. “Our first club four had a solid row and was able to get a finishing position high enough to guarantee an entry for next year. Our club eight had a strong row finishing 11th which also guarantees a spot for next year.”
All eyes were on Miami’s lone entry in Sunday’s Women’s Championship 4+ event. Coxed by Colleen Gillis, the quartet of Taegan Lynch, Caroline Shaw, Jane Moore and Cristina Salinas teamed to finished 16th with a time of 20:44.951.
The Head of the Charles Regatta, held in Cambridge, Mass., is widely acclaimed as the world’s largest two-day rowing event, drawing over 9,000 athletes around the world to compete in 55 different race events.
Boats racing in the Head of the Charles compete against one another and the clock, with the boats starting sequentially, approximately 15 seconds apart.

Following this weekend’s racing, Miami will wrap up the fall with a home regatta against UCF on Nov. 4.
The spring session of racing will begin with a scrimmage in February before kicking into high gear on March 11-12 at the Cardinal Invite in Chattanooga, Tenn. A week later, the Canes will travel to Fellsmere, Fla., to race against Columbia and Florida Tech on March 18.
Miami will compete at a regatta in Sarasota, Fla., the weekend of March 31-April 1 before heading to the Knecht Cup on April 8-9. The Canes will travel to UCF on April 29 for their final competitive races before the ACC Championships, scheduled for May 13-14 in Clemson, S.C. The NCAA Rowing Championships are slated for May 26-28 at Lake Mercer in Windsor, N.J.
