@CanesRowing Ready for Head of the Charles

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing team will have four boats in action at the prestigious 2016 Head of the Charles this weekend.

The Head of the Charles Regatta, held in Cambridge, Mass., is widely acclaimed as the world’s largest two-day rowing event, drawing over 9,000 athletes around the world to compete in 55 different race events. This event will present a new challenge, as the team attempts to compete away from home for the first time this season.

“There is nothing in rowing like the Head of the Charles,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Our team has been working hard for the opportunity to race in Boston this weekend. The athletes are excited and can’t wait to race down the course for The U.”

The Canes will have four entries in the prestigious regatta. Miami has two entries in the Women’s Club 4+ event, scheduled for 1:10 p.m., on Saturday and one boat slated to race in the Women’s Club 8+ at 1:51 p.m., on Saturday. The Canes also have one entry in the Championships 4+ event, scheduled for 2:02 p.m., on Sunday.

Boats racing in the Head of the Charles will compete against one another and the clock. The boats will start sequentially, approximately 15 seconds apart.

More information on the Head of the Charles is available at the race’s official website.

Following this weekend’s racing, Miami will wrap up the fall with a home regatta against UCF on Nov. 4.

The spring session of racing will begin with a scrimmage in February before kicking into high gear on March 11-12 at the Cardinal Invite in Chattanooga, Tenn. A week later, the Canes will travel to Fellsmere, Fla., to race against Columbia and Florida Tech on March 18.

Miami will compete at a regatta in Sarasota, Fla., the weekend of March 31-April 1 before heading to the Knecht Cup on April 8-9. The Canes will travel to UCF on April 29 for their final competitive races before the ACC Championships, scheduled for May 13-14 in Clemson, S.C. The NCAA Rowing Championships are slated for May 26-28 at Lake Mercer in Windsor, N.J.
