Four Hurricanes to Compete in the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team will continue its 2016-17 campaign this weekend at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational held at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta.
Four Hurricanes will be making the trip to Georgia this weekend, including juniors Kevin Bondar, Niclas Genovese and Nile Clark and sophomore Dane Dunlap.
Both Clark and Dunlap will be making their season debuts, with Dunlap competing in his first career tournament after sitting all of last season due to injury.
The three junior classmates will open up singles play Friday at 9 a.m. in the Division III Draw. Bondar will open the weekend against [1-seed] Elijah Melendez of Georgia Tech, while Clark will take on Vikram Chari of Vanderbilt. Genovese will face off against Vanderbilt’s Tate Allwardt.
At 3:30 p.m., Dunlap will make his collegiate debut with Genovese in the Division III draw for doubles against Vanderbilt’s Chari and Alex Ross.
In the same division Bondar and Clark will team up against Trevor Croyder and Clarke Wilson of Furman.
Earlier this season, both Bondar and Genovese competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
In the Round of 64, Bondar took care of business against Sam Dromsky of Georgia in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, to advance into the Round of 32, where he came up on the short end against Virginia Tech’s, Henrik Korsgaard, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Genovese defeated Georgia State senior Valentin Horvat, 6-2, 6-3, in the Division III, round of 32. Later in the afternoon in the round of 16, Genovese defeated Carlos Tajes of Tennessee Tech, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
In the Division III quarterfinals, against Victor Chaw of Lipscomb, Genovese fell, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
The tournament, which runs from Friday through Sunday, features nine schools, including: Auburn, Florida, Furman, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
