Cason Tabbed as ACC Offensive Player of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman forward Dejah Cason of the University of Miami soccer team has been selected as the ACC Offensive Player of Week, as announced Tuesday morning by the conference.
Cason tallied an assist and scored the match-winning goal in the Hurricanes’ lone contest last week, a 2-1 victory over Wake Forest Sunday at Cobb Stadium.
“I am so excited for Dejah,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “She deserves this wonderful honor after her performance this weekend. She scored a clutch goal for us to win our game against Wake Forest.”
A native of nearby Hollywood, Fla., Cason has played in all 12 matches and earned six starts in her opening campaign at Miami (8-4-0, 3-1-0 ACC). She has two goals and four assists thus far, with both her goals proving to be the decisive tallies in matches decided by one goal.
Sunday was the first time Cason logged both an assist and a goal in the same match. She assisted on senior forward Gracie Lachowecki’s match-opener in the fourth minute and then found the back of the net in the 58th minute after receiving a superb cross from redshirt senior defender Shannon McCarthy.
This conference honor is the first collegiate accolade for Cason, who ranks fourth on the Hurricanes with eight points. Her play against the Demon Deacons helped Miami post a third consecutive conference win for the first time in program history.
This is the second straight week Miami has had the ACC Offensive Player of the Week. Lachowecki earned the award last Tuesday, while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce was the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Cason and the Hurricanes will return to action Thursday night at 7 p.m., when they take on No. 16 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
