Canes Shine at USRowing Club Nationals

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing team had two Hurricanes excel at the 2016 USRowing Club Nationals.

Taegan Lynch and Colleen Gillis combined for five medals while competing with Vesper Boat Club from Philadelphia. Lynch and Gillis helped Vesper Boat Club win the Colgan Cup, awarded to the team with the most total points at the USRowing Club Nationals.

“I am really proud of Taegan and Colleen,” Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson said. “It has been such great racing for them. The more you race, the better you get, so all the experience they are gaining will help them continue to develop as athletes as well as have a big, positive impact on our whole team.”

Lynch rowed in three boats for Vesper, winning gold in the women’s senior eight, silver in the women’s intermediate eight and bronze in the women’s intermediate four event. The rising junior teamed with Gillis, an incoming freshman coxswain, in the women’s intermediate eight event, while Gillis coxed Vesper’s women’s senior four boat to a silver medal.

The 2016 USRowing Club National Championships were held July 13-17, on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. The event features national championship racing in 79 events in the U17, U19, intermediate and elite/senior categories. In the Olympic year, the USRowing National Championships for elite events are combined with the USRowing Club National Championships.

Lynch and Gillis will be back on the water with Vesper Boat Club at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The 2016 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta is the 134th edition of the event, held annually in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta is hailed as the top amateur rowing event in North America.
