@CanesWBB Trio Impresses at FIBA U20 Euros
MATOSINHOS, Portugal – The three members of the University of Miami women’s basketball team competing in the FIBA U20 European Championship Division A all made their marks last week.
Incoming freshman Serena-Lynn Geldof helped lead Belgium to a fifth-place finish, while rising sophomores Laura Cornelius and Emese Hof paced the Netherlands throughout the competition.
In seven contests for Belgium, Geldof averaged 8.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.0 block and 1.0 steal in 24.9 minutes per game. She posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Spain, and tallied 16 points and nine boards against Greece. Miami’s 6-foot-6-inch rookie center recorded 12 rebounds against Turkey, including five on the offensive end.
Hof put up big numbers in the event, scoring 15-or-more points in four of her seven outings and grabbing at least five rebounds in every game. She averaged 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 blocked shots per game while shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 83.3 percent at the line. The 6-foot-3-inch forward/center recorded one double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in her first outing, then was three rebounds shy of two others with 25 points and nine rebounds against Germany and 28 points and eight rebounds against Portugal.
Cornelius shot 41.7 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from 3-point range in seven games for the Netherlands. She was a perfect 13-of-13 at the line, including an 8-of-8 performance against Sweden. The 5-foot-8-inch guard averaged 5.0 assists to go along with 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. In her opening game against Latvia, she tallied 12 rebounds and seven assists, and in her final game of the event, she posted 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
