CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami’s Brittny Ellis and Henri Delauze will compete this weekend for a chance to represent their country on an international stage this summer.
Ellis will compete at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Championships, while Delauze is set to race at the Bahamian Senior National Championships.
Ellis is running in the 400m at the U.S. Junior Championships, hosted at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif., from June 24-26. The freshman will run in the first round of the women’s 400m, beginning at 8:20 p.m. ET on Saturday. She will look to advance to Sunday’s final, scheduled for 9:45 p.m. ET, where she could earn a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team that will compete at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland from July 19-24.
A native of Gurnee, Ill., Ellis earned First Team All-America honors after helping the Hurricanes finish seventh in the women’s 4x400m at the NCAA Championships. She also helped the Canes run the fifth-fastest time in school history, posting a time of 3:29.68 in the semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Also an outstanding student, she was named All-ACC Academic for the outdoor track and field season, sweeping the awards for both indoor and outdoor track and field during her first year of college.
Delauze will run the 400m at the Bahamian Senior National Championships at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, competing in the preliminaries on Friday and looking to advance to Saturday’s final. While the Senior National Championships could serve as a gateway to the Olympics for Delauze, the sophomore is also eligible to qualify for the Bahamian Junior National Team that would travel to Poland for the IAAF World U20 Championships.
The Freeport, Bahamas, native had a strong second year at Miami, reaching the NCAA East Preliminary in the 400m for the second straight season. Delauze ran a personal-best time of 46.43 seconds in the 400m at the ACC Championships, placing fourth with a time that ranks third in school history.
