Rowing Earns Six All-ACC Academic honors
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Six members of the University of Miami rowing team were selected to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Rowing team, the conference office announced Thursday.
Sarah Aschebrock, Caitlin Lowe, Taegan Lynch, Caitlin White-Parsons, Ally Whitty and Gigi Williamson were among the 56 student-athletes named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team. The honorees were selected from a record 253 nominees from nine schools. Aschebrock, Lowe, White-Parsons and Williamson were four of the 25 rowers who repeated as All-ACC Academic honorees from the 2015 list.
Whitty was one of 14 student-athletes to earn All-ACC and All-ACC Academic honors in 2016. The senior was a key part of Miami’s success during the 2015-16 season, earning CRCA Second Team All-Region honors. A Second Team All-ACC selection, Whitty won the Collegiate Championship 4+ and Collegiate Championship 8+ events at the Head of the Indian Creek, placed eighth in the Women’s Championship 4+ event at the Head of the Charles, helped the Canes win the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, won the Women’s Varsity Pair Final at the Knecht Cup and was a member of the 1V8+ that won its Petite Final at the ACC Rowing Championship. Whitty, who graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, finishes her career as a two-time All-ACC Academic selection.
Aschebrock is a three-time All-ACC Academic selection and a three-time CRCA National Scholar-Athlete. The senior has been a member of the 1V8+ since her freshman year. She helped the Hurricanes win the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic in 2013 and 2016 and she won the Women’s Open 2- at the 2016 Head of the Hooch. Aschebrock also helped Miami’s 1V8+ win the Petite Final at the 2016 ACC Championship. The North Shore, New Zealand, native is a two-time All-ACC Academic selection, and a member of the UM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board. Aschebrock graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in criminology.
White-Parsons is a two-time All-ACC Academic selection, adding the honor to a list that includes a 2016 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete award and her 2015 All-ACC and All-ACC Academic selections. The senior was a member of the 1V8+ in 2015-16, helping the Canes win the 1V8+ Petite Final at the ACC Rowing Championship. White-Parsons was on Miami’s top varsity boat in two seasons as a Hurricane, helping the Canes win the Cal Cup at the 2016 San Diego Crew Classic. White-Parsons graduated in May with a degree in motion pictures.
Williamson was named All-ACC Academic for the second consecutive year. The senior was also tabbed a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete in 2015 and 2016. A native of Norfolk, Va., she was a member of the 2V8+ that won the third level final at the San Diego Crew Classic. She also helped the 1V8+ to a victory at the Governor’s Cup. Williamson graduated in May from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in geological science.
Lowe earned her third consecutive All-ACC Academic honor, adding the distinction to her three CRCA National Scholar-Athlete awards. The senior teamed with Aschebrock to win the Women’s Open 2- at the 2016 Head of the Hooch. Lowe was also a member of Miami’s Cal Cup-winning boats in 2013 and 2016 and helped the Hurricanes win the Varsity Eight Petite Final at this 2016 ACC Rowing Championship. Lowe graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology.
Lynch was named All-ACC Academic for the first time in her career. She teamed with Whitty to win the Women’s Varsity Pair Final at the Knecht Cup and was a member of the 1V8+ that won its Petite Final at the ACC Rowing Championship. The sophomore was also on boats that won the Collegiate Championship 4+ and Collegiate Championship 8+ events at the Head of the Indian Creek, placed eighth in the Women’s Championship 4+ event at the Head of the Charles and won the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic. Lynch, who is majoring in exercise physiology, earned her first CRCA National Scholar-Athlete award following the 2016 season.
To be nominated for the All-ACC Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools.
