Danny Garcia Selected by Seattle Mariners

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior lefthander Danny Garcia was selected in the 15th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Seattle Mariners Saturday.

The selection of Garcia, who entered NCAA Super Regionals with a 9-3 record and 3.50 ERA, marked the second straight year a Hurricane was picked by Seattle.

Garcia, the No. 447 overall pick, joined teammates Zack Collins (first round, Chicago White Sox), Willie Abreu (sixth round, Colorado Rockies), Bryan Garcia (sixth round, Detroit Tigers) and Brandon Lopez (10th round, Minnesota Twins) as Miami draftees through the first 15 rounds.

In his first year as a member of the weekend rotation, Garcia is tied for second on the team with nine wins. He has recorded 46 strikeouts in 87.1 innings.

The Miami native, who was named to the Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament Team last weekend, delivered a dominant 7.2-inning start in the Hurrcanes’ NCAA Regional opener against Stetson to help Miami advance to the next round of the postseason.

Garcia tossed at least six innings in seven of his 16 starts this year. He has compiled a 16-5 record in his first three years with the Hurricanes, with 144 strikeouts in 190.1 combined innings.

The 2016 MLB Draft continues Saturday with Rounds 11-40.
