Abreu Selected by Colorado Rockies in Sixth Round
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior outfielder Willie Abreu was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Colorado Rockies Friday afternoon.
Abreu, a third-team All-ACC selection for the third straight year, became the first Hurricane selected by the Rockies since 2013. Picked No. 170 overall, Abreu joined teammate Zack Collins (No. 10, Chicago White Sox) as Miami draftees through the first six rounds.
A talented lefthanded power hitter, Abreu leads Miami with 55 RBI and ranks second on the team with 12 home runs. His slugging percentage of .507 is the second-best on the team, while his 12 doubles rank third-most.
A member of the Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament Team for the second straight year, Abreu hit a two-run home run in the regional finale vs. Long Beach State (June 5) to help send Miami to the second weekend of the postseason for the second time in his three years with Miami.
One of just four Hurricanes to start all 59 games entering NCAA Super Regionals, Abreu served as team captain for the second consecutive season. His 13 multi-RBI games are tied for the team lead, while his 17 multi-hit games this season are fifth-most.
The 2016 MLB Draft continues Friday through Round 10. The remaining rounds will occur Saturday.
