Lohan, Wagner Lone Top-10 Duo in Last ITA Rankings
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team features the nation’s only top-10 teammate duo in the final Oracle/ITA singles rankings of the 2015-16 season.
Sophomore Sinead Lohan and senior Stephanie Wagner are ranked No. 6 and No. 10 in country, respectively. In addition, Yolimar Ogando ended the year ranked No. 50 despite missing the full spring season due to injury, while fellow sophomore Wendy Zhang checked in at No. 81 on the list.
In the last installment of the Oracle/ITA doubles rankings, Wagner and Zhang are ranked eighth, clinching ITA All-America status. Wagner also holds the No. 86 spot with senior Clementina Riobueno.
Miami is one of nine schools in the nation with four ranked singles players, one of four with three in the top 100 and one of just three with a quartet in the top 85. The Hurricanes are one of five teams with a trio of top-50 singles players and the only school with two players in the top 10.
The No. 6 spot for Lohan matches the highest of her career, which she achieved earlier this year on March 22. An NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist who finished the season with a 40-6 record, Lohan is the highest-ranked sophomore in the country.
Lohan, who was ranked in the top nine the entire spring, is the highest-ranked Hurricane to end a season since Bianca Eichkorn ended the 2010-11 campaign fifth in the country.
Wagner earned the highest end-of-season ranking of her stellar career in doubles and is one just five players in the top 10 in both singles and doubles. The winningest singles player in program history, Wagner is the first Hurricane to finish in the top 10 in singles in back-to-back years since Laura Vallverdu, now Miami’s associate head coach, did so in in 2008-09 and 2009-10. She is also the fifth Hurricane to end three straight seasons ranked in the top 30.
Ogando, a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, was ranked in the top 50 the entire spring despite not playing in a single match after Oct. 25. She began the spring season ranked No. 21 in the country.
Zhang was ranked in the top 85 for all but two rankings releases in the spring and peaked at No. 61 nationally. She finished 16 spots higher in 2016 than she did as a freshman, when she closed at No. 101.
Wagner and Zhang are Miami’s first top-10 doubles duo since Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque ended the 2013-14 season sixth in the rankings. The No. 8 spot matches the highest mark they had all year. Wagner and Riobueno were nationally-ranked the entire spring, checking in as high as No. 22.
As a team, the Hurricanes finished the season ranked No. 10 in the nation, after posting a 21-6 (12-2 ACC) record and reaching the NCAA Team Championship Sweet 16.
