Lomacki's Season Ends at NCAA Championships
TULSA, Okla. – University of Miami sophomore Piotr Lomacki ended his season Wednesday afternoon in the Round of 64 at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships, held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
No. 43 Lomacki lost, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-0, to No. 16 Jared Hiltzik, a senior from the University of Illinois.
Lomacki cruised through his first set, 6-4, to take the match lead. Early in his second set he fell behind, 0-2, then farther to 2-5, but made a fierce comeback to even the score at 5-5. Lomacki was broken by Hiltzik to fall behind, 5-6, but the Hurricane came back to tie the match again at 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker. The native of Warsaw, Poland, came up short in the tiebreaker and lost the second set 7-6 (2). Miami’s sophomore was then outlasted in the third set, falling 6-0 to end the match.
Lomacki ends the spring season 14-9, and went 6-5 in the fall, for a 20-14 overall record in his second campaign at The U.
Lomacki was the first Hurricane to be selected for the NCAA Singles Championships since 2009, when Daniel Vallverdu represented Miami in the tournament. Omar Aly was picked as an alternate for the tournament in 2014, although he did not play in the event.
Lomacki was one of six underclassmen and 15 total student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference to be selected for the Championships. He was tabbed to the All-ACC Second Team at the end of the 2016 regular season.
Miami’s sophomore opened the spring season ranked No. 23 in ITA singles and entered the NCAA Championships at No. 43. He was ranked in the top 40 for 17 of his singles matches this season. In doubles, Lomacki broke in to the ITA rankings at No. 66 prior to the ACC Championships, and is currently ranked No. 75 with teammate Nile Clark.
Lomacki won five singles matches over ranked opponents this season, including a three-set win over No. 16 Benjamin Lock of Florida State and a victory against No. 38 Brayden Schnur of North Carolina. He won two ACC doubles matches over ranked opponents: No. 10 Mac Styslinger and Thai-Son Kwaitkowski of Virginia and No. 30 Jack Murray and Brayden Schnur of UNC.
In singles, he won a team-high 14 matches, all at the top position, and tied for most wins in doubles with eight. Lomacki won 11 total singles matches in two sets, and five of his six ACC wins were in just two sets.
