@CanesRowing Closes Out ACC Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of Miami rowing team wrapped up the 2016 ACC Rowing Championship with a victory in the Varsity Eight Petite Final.

The Hurricanes had four boats in action on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C., and it was Miami’s top boat that put together a victorious row.

“Our athletes were able to finish the season with their best races here at ACCs,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “They showed they picked up speed through the season and were able to make adjustments as they progressed. There is some exceptional competition within the ACC and we will look to continue to build the squad to be more competitive next year.”

Miami’s 1V8+ crossed the finish line first in the Varsity Eight Petite Final, winning the race with a time of 6:41.569. Senior Ally Whitty, who sat in the 6-seat of the 1V8+, was named Second Team All-ACC following the conclusion of the conference regatta.

“Being able to finish my ACC rowing career with that race is one to remember,” Whitty said. “From the first stroke of the race, I knew it was going to be our race. We adjusted our race plan from Friday’s heat and executed it perfectly. I’m going to miss this crew and can’t wait to watch them race next season from the shore. “

The Hurricanes finished second in the Second Varsity Eight Petite Final, finishing a second behind the winning Boston College crew. Miami’s 2V8+ finished with a time of 6:49.567.

“As a boat, we decided to just go row and that is exactly what we did,” sophomore Caroline Shaw said. “We executed our plan and rowed the best we have all season.”

The Canes finished third in the First Varsity Four Petite Final with a time of 8:00.314, while Miami was second in the Second Varsity Four Petite Final with a time of 7:57.551.

The four Miami boats first rowed on Friday night, competing in heats to determine seeding for Saturday morning’s Championship Finals.

The Hurricanes’ 1V8+ finished fourth in Heat 2 of the Varsity Eight event with a time of 6:38.287, while Miami’s 2V8+ finished fifth in Heat 1 of the Second Varsity Eight event with a time of 6:59.565.

Miami’s 1V4+ placed fifth in Heat 1 of the First Varsity Four event with a time of 8:07.588, while the Hurricanes’ 2V4 finished fourth in Heat 2 of the Second Varsity Four event with a time of 8:04.749.
