Miami Meets UNC in Top-10 Showdown for ACC Title
CARY, N.C. â The University of Miami womenâs tennis team is set for its sixth appearance in the ACC Championship final Sunday at 10 a.m., at Cary Tennis Park.
Seventh-ranked and second-seeded Miami (19-4, 12-2 ACC) will meet second-ranked and top-seeded North Carolina (28-2, 14-0 ACC) for the conference crown. The Hurricanes enter on a 15-match winning streak, while the Tar Heels have won their past 18 affairs.
Miami took down No. 15-ranked and third-seeded Georgia Tech, 4-2, in Saturdayâs semifinals, while North Carolina topped No. 16-ranked and fifth-seeded Virginia, 4-1.
The Hurricanes are 15-10 all-time in ACC Championship play, including 1-1 against the Tar Heels, downing them en route to winning the 2013 title. Miami holds a 14-12 edge over North Carolina in the overall series.
Three Tar Heels are in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings, including the top-ranked player in the country, Hayley Carter. Joining her on the list are No. 39 Whitney Kay and No. 57 Jessie Aney.
In doubles, Carter and Kay are ranked fourth nationally, while Aney and Kate Vialle hold the No. 89 position.
For Miami, senior Stephanie Wagner and sophomore Sinead Lohan check in at sixth and eighth, respectively, in the singles rankings. Yolimar Ogando is No. 43 in the nation despite having yet to play this spring due to injury. Fellow sophomore Wendy Zhang sits in the No. 61 position.
The Hurricane duo of Wagner and Zhang is ranked ninth in doubles, while Wagner also comes in at No. 69 with senior Clementina Riobueno.
