Miami to Play No. 15 Georgia Tech in ACC Semis
CARY, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will make its third appearance in four years in the ACC Championship semifinals when it faces Georgia Tech at Cary Tennis Park Saturday at 10 a.m.
Miami (18-4, 12-2), ranked seventh and seeded second, won 4-2 against No. 27 Syracuse, the No. 7 seed, Thursday morning in the quarterfinals.
No. 15-ranked and third-seeded Georgia Tech (17-7, 11-3 ACC) posted a 4-0 victory Thursday over No. 47 Notre Dame, the No. 11 seed, to reach the semifinals. Both Miami and Georgia Tech received double byes to open the tournament.
The Hurricanes are 14-10 all-time in ACC Championship play, including 1-5 against the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Miami is 10-11 versus Georgia Tech, winning each of the past five meetings, including posting a 7-0 victory in the 2016 regular season match Jan. 29 in Coral Gables, Fla.
Two Yellow Jackets have Oracle/ITA singles rankings, with Paige Hourigan at No. 41 and Johnnise Renaud at No. 42. Georgia Tech also features one nationally-ranked doubles pair in Hourigan and Kendal Woodard, who check in at No. 10.
For Miami, senior Stephanie Wagner and sophomore Sinead Lohan are ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, in singles. Wagner enters the match with 132 singles wins in her career, one shy of Bianca Eichkorn’s program record.
Sophomore Yolimar Ogando is ranked No. 43 in the country even though she has yet to play this season due to injury. Wendy Zhang, also a sophomore, comes in at No. 61 nationally.
In doubles, Wagner and Zhang are the ninth-ranked pair in the country, while Wagner also holds the No. 69 place in the rankings with fellow senior Clementina Riobueno.
