@CanesWTennis Stays Seventh, Zhang Jumps to No. 61

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team held steady at No. 7 in the Oracle/ITA team rankings released Tuesday.

It is the fourth time in the last five weeks and the third time in a row Miami (13-4, 8-2 ACC) is ranked in the top 10 nationally. The Hurricanes are the second of six ACC teams in the top 20, good for the second-most of any conference, and nine of the ACC’s 15 teams are ranked in the top 35.

Individually, Wendy Zhang made a big move in the singles rankings after posting the first top-25 victory of her career. The sophomore skyrocketed from No. 109 to No. 61, marking her highest ranking of the season. It is also the second-highest ranking of Zhang’s career, behind only her No. 58 spot in the initial spring poll her freshman year on Jan. 6, 2015.

Zhang’s 48-spot rise was tied for the third-highest jump in the rankings of any player who was also ranked in the most recent poll.

Senior Stephanie Wagner, ranked fifth, and sophomore Sinead Lohan, ranked seventh, are the only top-seven duo in the country on the same team and one of just two top-10 singles pairs.

The No. 5 ranking is the second in a row for Wagner and matches the highest mark of her career. The No. 7 position ties the second-highest of Lohan’s career. Both players have been in the top 10 the entire spring.

In addition, sophomore Yolimar Ogando is ranked No. 41 in the country despite having missed the entire spring thus far duo to injury.

Wagner and Zhang retained their place as the ninth-ranked doubles pair in the country, while Wagner is also ranked No. 63 in doubles with fellow senior Clementina Riobueno. Wagner is one of just three players in the top nine in both singles and doubles.

Miami, riding a nine-match winning streak, will play its final two road matches of the regular season this weekend. The Hurricanes face No. 20 Wake Forest Friday at 4 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C., and will then take on No. 37 NC State Saturday at 11 a.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
