@CanesRowing Heads to San Diego Crew Classic
SAN DIEGO — The University of Miami rowing program will have two boats competing at the 2016 San Diego Crew Classic.
Miami will have a 1V8+ and 2V8+ racing on Mission Bay in San Diego, a familiar course for the Canes who have had success out west in recent years. The Canes won the Cal Cup in 2013 and had both the 1V8+ and Novice 8+ reach the Grand Final in their respective events a year ago.
“The team and coaches are excited for the racing in San Diego,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The racing at the Crew Classic is on a bigger scale than we have experienced so far this season. There are more competitors, more racing, and a full six-lane course. Our boats will have the chance to test their speed, once again, with improvements we have been working on in practice. ”
The Hurricanes’ 1V8+ will be the first boat in action, racing in Heat B for the Women’s Collegiate Varsity Cal Cup. Coxed by freshman Lily Wittle, the Canes will have Caitlin Lowe, Taegan Lynch, Alison Whitty, Sarah Aschebrock, Alex Gunner, Jane Moore, Hannah Nielsen and Caitlin White-Parsons representing Miami in a raced scheduled to begin at 10:52 a.m. ET.
The 1V8+ is in a heat with Kansas Sate, Saint Mary’s, George Washington, UC San Diego and Santa Clara. The top two finishers in the heat will advance to the Grand Final, while the third and fourth finishers will move to the Petite Final and the final two finishers will compete in the Third Final.
Miami’s 2V8+ is set to race at 12:52 p.m. ET in Heat B of the Women’s Collegiate 2V division. The Hurricanes’ boat will be coxed by freshman Jackie Lippincott, followed by Taylor Richard, Catahrine Tayler, Caroline Shaw, Elise Wiley, Gigi Williamson, Alyssa Basdavanos, Alexa Aguilar and Katie Robinson.
The 2V8+ is in a heat with Texas, UCLA, Gonzaga, Kensas State, Saint Mary’s and Humbloldt State. The top two finishers in the heat will advance to the Grand Final, while the third and fourth finishers will move to the Petite Final and the final two finishers will compete in the Third Final.
In addition to this weekend’s San Diego Crew Classic, Miami will also travel to Mercer County, N.J., to compete in the Knecht Cup on April 9-10.
The Canes will host UCF on April 23 in the lone home event of the 2016 season. In addition to racing against the Knight, Miami seniors Aschebrock, Lowe, Nielsen, Joletta Silva, White-Parsons, Whitty and Williamson will race on their home course for the final time.
The Hurricanes will close out the 2016 spring season at the ACC Championships on May 13-14 in Clemson, S.C.
