Women's Track Enters Outdoor Season at No. 21

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Miami’s women’s track and field team is ranked No. 21 in the outdoor preseason edition of USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings.

Fresh off winning the 2016 ACC Indoor Championship, the Hurricane women are one of four teams from the ACC to appear in the USTFCCCA outdoor preseason Top 25, released Wednesday. Miami had been ranked as high as No. 15 during the 2016 indoor season.

The National Team Computer Rankings are complied by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists. Marks from the previous outdoor season — not this past indoor season that just finished — are counted until enough data can be collected from the current season. Then, past data is dropped and only data from the current campaign is used from there on out.

Miami has 13 different marks that contributed to its team score of 88.79 points. The Hurricanes moved up seven spots from No. 28 in the 2015 final rankings.

Two of the 13 scored marks were recorded during last week’s Hurricane Invitational. Aiyanna Stiverne’s 200m time of 23.33 seconds that ranks first in the ACC and fourth in the NCAA this season is Miami’s top new mark. The women;s 4x100m relay of Carolyn Brown, Erin Ford, Trishelle Leacock and Ebony Morrison combined for an ACC-leading time of 44.98 seconds that ranks 13th in the country.

Miami also has Shakima Wimbley’s 400m and 200m times from a year ago that rank first and second, respectively in the data used for the preseason rankings. The Canes also have a 400m time from Stiverne, 100m hurdles times from Morrison and Jamika Glades and Glades’ top 400m hurdles time from a year a go, The Hurricanes’ top 4x400m relay time of 3:30.22 from a year ago rounds out the track events adding to Miami’s score.

The Hurricanes also have points coming from four field events. 2016 indoor All-American Dakota Dailey-Harris’ outdoor best mark of 1.78m in the high jump is joined by 2016 indoor All-American Alysha Newman’s 2015 season-best mark of 4.31m in the pole vault.

Throwers Tiffany Okieme and Precious Ogunleye wrap up the scoring for Miami. Okieme’s mark of 15.90m in the shot put and Ogunleye’s mark of 61.17m in the hammer throw complete the 13 marks contributing to Miami’s team score.

Miami will host its second of three home meets scheduled for the 2016 outdoor season this Friday. The Hurricane Twilight Meet will feature the host Hurricanes competing against LSU, Cincinnati, FIU, FAU and Bethune Cookman. The Canes will also host the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 8-9.
