Wagner Named ACC Player of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Stephanie Wagner of the University of Miami women’s tennis team was named the ACC Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday evening.
Wagner, ranked eighth in the nation, shared the weekly honor with Duke junior Chalena Scholl. It is the fifth time in her career Wagner has garnered the award.
“Steffi has been playing some amazing tennis,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She has had a great start to the season.”
In Miami’s road matches at North Carolina and Duke, both ranked in the top 10, Wagner posted a pair of victories over top-30 opponents at the No. 1 singles position.
Against North Carolina Friday, Wagner took down the nation’s second-ranked player, Hayley Carter, 7-6 (10-8), 0-6, 7-5. It marked the fourth-consecutive win over a top-15 opponent by Wagner, two of which have come against players ranked second nationally. Carter entered the match unbeaten in the spring and 27-2 overall in 2015-16.
In the Hurricanes’ match at Duke, Wagner rolled past No. 26 Beatrice Capra in dominant fashion, earning a 6-1, 6-3 win.
The third-winningest player in program history with 120 victories, Wagner is 8-1 this spring. She has a 6-1 mark against ranked opponents, with four wins over top-30 players.
Wagner and the No. 21 Hurricanes (4-4, 1-2 ACC) are back on the court Wednesday at 2 p.m. when they face No. 71 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. Live stats for the match can be found HERE.
