@CanesWTennis Moves to No. 12 Nationally
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team rose one position in the Oracle/ITA rankings announced Wednesday afternoon, checking in at No. 12 in the country.
The Hurricanes began the season ranked No. 13 nationally, marking the 12th-straight year they earned a top-15 position to open the spring.
Miami is one of six ACC schools ranked in the top 25 this week, including one of three in the top dozen, along with fifth-ranked North Carolina and eighth-ranked Virginia.
The Hurricanes opened their season this past weekend at home in the Miami Spring Invite, posting a 16-6 overall record, including an 11-3 mark in singles play. Miami went 5-0 against nationally ranked singles players and 2-1 against nationally ranked doubles pairs.
Sophomore Sinead Lohan, ranked seventh nationally, won 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) over No. 33 Astra Sharma, the 2015 NCAA Team Championship MVP for reigning national champ and top-ranked Vanderbilt. Senior Clementina Riobueno downed a top-50 opponent for the third time in her career, defeating No. 44 Tea Jandric of Ole Miss, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Senior Stephanie Wagner, ranked ninth in the country, earned two ranked wins. First, she beat No. 84 Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, and then she took down No. 24 Sydney Campbell, a 2015 ITA All-American, in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Miami returns to the court Friday at 10 a.m. against Middle Tennessee in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hurricanes then face either No. 41 Auburn or No. 69 Michigan State at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Saturday.
