Celebration of Women's Athletics Set for Jan. 24
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami Director of Athletics Blake James announced Monday plans to host the second-annual Celebration of Women’s Athletics, which will feature a brunch and the Hurricanes women’s basketball game against Florida State.
The event, founded by University of Miami Board of Trustees members Hilarie Bass, Barbara Havenick and Laurie Silvers, will be held Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at the BankUnited Center.
“The student-athletes at the University of Miami are a truly amazing group of individuals and include some of the finest representatives the University has to offer,” James said. “I encourage people to take the time to support those student-athletes by coming out to this wonderful event, which got off to such a great start a year ago.”
The Celebration of Women’s Athletics will honor the historic legacy of Women’s Athletics at the University of Miami. Sport plays an incredible role in the development of women and the opportunities provided by Miami Athletics help to shape the future of tomorrow’s female leaders.
The event will feature a brunch immediately followed by the University of Miami women’s basketball game against Florida State. Miami female student-athletes who have excelled on the playing fields, as well as in the classroom and community, will be honored during the brunch.
The event will also kick off the Inauguration Week of new University of Miami President Dr. Julio Frenk.
“During Inauguration Week, the University will be looking forward towards our future but will also reflect on our history,” said Sergio Gonzalez, UM Senior VP for University Advancement and External Affairs. “We feel that a great way to reflect on our history of success is to begin the week of festivities with a celebration of our student-athletes.”

Sponsorships for the Celebration are available. For $1,000, a Table Sponsorship will include a table at the brunch, table recognition and recognition in the program. For $2,500, Presenting Sponsors will receive a table at the brunch with a student-athlete, recognition on the back cover of the program, visible recognition during the brunch and an announcement of recognition during the women’s basketball game.
A Title Sponsorship is $5,000 and includes a table at the brunch with a student-athlete, recognition on the front cover of the program, visible recognition during the brunch and an announcement of recognition during the women’s basketball game.
