Champion! Max Andrews Wins Clay Court Classic
SARASOTA, Fla. – University of Miami junior Max Andrews won the singles main draw of the Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Sarasota, Fla.
Andrews, the third seed in the event, defeated the fourth seed, Ruben Weber of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-4 Sunday afternoon to take home the championship.
Andrews’ road to the championship included a pair of three-set matches, and three two-set wins. The native of Manchester, Eng., began the classic with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lubomir Cuba (Michigan), then won his Round of 16 match over Lasse Muscheites (UNF), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Andrews then defeated Benjamin Tso (Princeton), 6-3, 6-1, setting up an all-Miami semifinals between Andrews and teammate Christian Langmo, the second-seeded player in the tournament. Langmo retired due to injury in the third set, sending Andrews to the Sunday finals match.
Andrews joined the Miami team this fall after transferring from Rice University over the summer. At Rice, he was an All-Conference USA doubles selection as a sophomore and led Rice with 15 singles wins as a rookie.
The Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic is Miami’s final event of the fall season. The Canes will open play this spring on Jan. 16, when Miami faces St. John’s at 1 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla.
