Andrews in Singles Finals at Clay Court
SARASOTA, Fla. – University of Miami junior Max Andrews will play in the singles main draw finals of the Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Sarasota, Fla., on Sunday.
Andrews, the third seed of the event, will face four-seed Ruben Weber of Minnesota at noon in the finals.
The main draw singles semifinals were all Miami, after Andrews started his day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Benjamin Tso of Princeton and Christian Langmo defeated Jeffrey Brown of Louisville, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, pitting the Canes against one another in the semis.
Andrews took the first-set lead, but Langmo, the second seed in the event, won the second set, pushing the match to a third set. Langmo retired with an injury in that third set, giving Andrews the 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 edge, and a berth in the finals on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, Langmo and Andrews battled together in the main draw doubles semifinals, but came up short to Andres Alfonzo and Oliver Landert of FGCU, 8-7(4).
In other singles matches on Saturday, Niclas Genovese lost, 6-3, 6-2, to Charleston’s Juan Estevarena in the consolation bracket.
The Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic is Miami’s final event of the fall season. The Canes will open play this spring on Jan. 16, when Miami faces St. John’s at 1 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla.
