Langmo and Andrews Move on in Sarasota
SARASOTA, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team posted a successful first day at the Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Sarasota, Fla.
Second-seeded Max Andrews and Christian Langmo teamed up to win a pair of matches on Friday and will play in Saturday’s doubles semifinals, and each will individually play in the singles quarterfinals.
In the doubles round of 16, Andrews and Langmo took down Juan Estevarena and Vasily Kichigin of Charleston, 8-6. Then the Miami duo moved past the quarterfinals after the North Florida pair of Jonathan Deautriell and Lasse Muscheites defaulted at 0-15 in the first set, due to injury.
In singles, second-seeded Langmo earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alberto De Meo (UNF) in the round of 32, then defeated Austin Jones (Navy), 6-3, 6-3. Andrews, who is the third seed, took down Lubomir Cuba of Michigan, 6-4, 6-1, then in the round of 16, beat UNF’s Muscheites in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Andrews and Langmo will play in the semifinal doubles at 9 a.m. Saturday and the quarterfinal singles will begin at noon, followed by semifinal singles at 4 p.m.
In Miami’s other doubles match, Niclas Genovese and Bernard Tefel played an epic match against Michigan’s Carter Lin and Kevin Wong, but came up short in the tiebreaker, 8-7 (13-11).
Tefel won his singles match over Michigan’s Tyler Gardiner 6-2, 6-3, but lost in the round of 16 to the fourth-seeded Ruben Weber of Minnesota, 6-3, 6-0. Genovese played top-seeded Tom Colautti of Princeton to three sets, but took the round of 32 loss, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. In the consolation round of 16, Genovese played his second three-set match of the day, defeating Minnesota’s Justyn Levin 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10).
