CORAL GABLES, Fla. The captains of the University of Miami soccer team for the 2015 season are writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com this year called Captain’s Corner.

In her third entry, midfielder Erin McGovern looked back on the Hurricanes’ last week-plus, which included a pair of matches at Cobb Stadium. The redshirt senior from Oradell, N.J. digs into Miami’s play against Duke, as well as the preparation for and win over NC State . . .

Hey, Canes fans! We had another exciting weekend of games at home. Thursday we played Duke at 7 p.m. This was a very hard-fought game on both ends, which unfortunately ended in a 1-0 loss for us. I was proud of my team for working hard up to the last minute. Although we were disappointed with the result, we were able to take a lot of positive things from the game to build on in practice over the weekend and be prepared for Sunday’s game.

Friday was more of a recovery day for us. We did a jog and stretch on the field and then went inside for ice baths. Afterwards, we watched film on NC State to begin our preparation for Sunday. Saturday at practice we focused on our game plan of how to beat NC State. We went over formations and defensive shape. We also focused on attacking and finishing our chances to ensure to capitalize on all opportunities we get in the game. We ended practice with a fun “green vs. orange challenge.” After a very competitive water balloon toss, the green team came away with the win.

Sunday we played NC State at 1 p.m. We wore our pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness and pregame we honored a little girl, Jaylene, battling cancer. She was an honorary captain with us and came out to call the coin toss. It was so great to be able to meet and spend time with this brave girl!

We came out a little slow in the first half and went down 2-0 quickly. At halftime we were able to regroup and re-energize for the second half. We played with heart and intensity in the second half and we were able to pull off a 3-2 comeback win in double overtime. Gracie Lachowecki saved the day once again, scoring a hat trick. She was also named ACC Offensive ACC Player of the Week for the second week in a row! A bunch of alumni came back for the game and were honored at halftime. It was so great seeing some old, friendly faces again!

This week at practice we turned our focus to Virginia Tech. We play the Hokies Saturday night away at 7 p.m. Check in next week to learn about the result! Thanks for reading!
