Eusebio Selected by Seattle Mariners
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior outfielder Ricky Eusebio became the fifth Hurricane selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, when the Seattle Mariners selected him in the 16th round.
Eusebio, selected No. 485 overall, joined teammates Andrew Suarez (No. 61, San Francisco Giants), David Thompson (No. 119, New York Mets), George Iskenderian (No. 211, Milwaukee Brewers) and Garrett Kennedy (No. 432, Los Angeles Dodgers) as Miami draftees through the first 16 rounds.
Eusebio served as one of the most productive leadoff hitters in the ACC in his first year as a regular starter. The right-handed hitter batted .297, recorded a .463 on-base percentage, and had 19 steals on the year.
Eusebio was hit by a pitch 19 times – the third-most in a single season in UM history – leading to an on-base percentage that ranked as the highest among all Hurricanes. He connected on 15 doubles, which ranked second most among all players, had two home runs and 29 RBI.
The Gulliver Prep product also led Miami with 51 walks, and did not commit an error in a dominant year as the team’s starting centerfielder. Eusebio was one of just three players to start all 64 games in 2015, helping power the Hurricanes to a 49-15 overall record, their second straight ACC Coastal Division crown, the NCAA Coral Gables Regional title and the 24th College World Series berth in program history.
The 2015 MLB Draft continues Wednesday with rounds No. 11-40.
