Suarez Selected in Second Round by Giants
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami redshirt junior lefthander Andrew Suarez became the first Hurricane selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft for the second straight year Monday, when the San Francisco Giants selected him with the 61st overall pick in the second round.
Suarez, who was picked by the Washington Nationals in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft but elected to return to school, was named a third-team All-ACC selection for the second straight season in 2015.
The Miami native and Christopher Columbus grad has a 9-1 record in 14 starts, and boasts the lowest ERA among starting pitchers at 2.96. Suarez has struck out 74 batters in 79.0 innings and walked just 19, holding opposing batters to a .252 batting average over the year.
Suarez was particularly effective in ACC play, finishing with a team-best 6-1 ACC record and 3.06 ERA.
The southpaw has compiled an 18-9 record in three seasons as a member of the weekend rotation, with 219 career strikeouts compared to just 54 walks.
He ended the regular season with a 3-0 record in his final three starts, totaling a 0.47 ERA over that stretch. In what could have been the final home start of his career at Mark Light Field on Friday night against VCU, Suarez tossed 5.0 innings with four strikeouts in a super regional win to help clinch Miami’s first College World Series berth since 2008.
Suarez will take the hill Saturday at TD Ameritrade Ballpark Omaha in Miami’s College World Series opener against Florida at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN.
The 2015 MLB Draft continues Tuesday, June 9 with rounds No. 3-10 at 1 p.m. Rounds No. 11-40 are set for Wednesday, June 10 at 12 p.m.
