Thompson, Woodrey Earn ACC Weekly Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami’s David Thompson and Clemson’s Reed Rohlman have been voted the ACC Baseball Co-Players of the Week, while Miami’s Thomas Woodrey garnered Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Thompson had another dominant week at the plate, finishing with five home runs and 12 RBIs over Miami’s four-win week to finish as the ACC’s leader in both categories. A junior third baseman, Thompson hit a two-run blast against No. 20 FAU on May 12 to open his week, and after an 0-for-3 performance in the team’s series opener against Georgia Tech, had a historic performance in Game 2.
Thompson had the first three-run home run game for a Hurricane since 2010, and had the first nine-RBI game since Chad Rupp in 1993. Thompson added another home run in the series finale to help cap the sweep of Georgia Tech at Mark Light Field.
Lefthander Thomas Woodrey delivered the best outing of his career in the series opener against Georgia Tech, tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout – the first for a Hurricane since J.D. Cockroft did so in 2003.
A junior from Lighthouse Point, Florida, Woodrey struck out a career high-tying seven batters, walked three, and did not allow a hit after a first-inning single from Yellow Jackets’ third baseman Matt Gonzalez. He threw 112 pitches to earn his sixth win of the season.
Miami opens play as the No. 2 seed at the 2015 ACC Baseball Championship on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against either No. 7 Virginia or No. 10 Georgia Tech. The game will be broadcast on RSN (ESPN3 simulcast), 560 WQAM and WVUM 90.5 FM.
