@HurricaneTennis Ready for ACC Championship
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the eighth time in its 10 seasons in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the University of Miami women’s tennis team is headed to the ACC Championship with a top-three seed.
The Hurricanes are seeded second at this week’s competition, which began Wednesday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ team received a double bye and will begin play Friday in the quarterfinal round.
While Miami (16-5, 12-2 ACC) does not yet know its opponent for the match, it will be either seventh-seeded Notre Dame or 10th-seeded Florida State. The Seminoles defeated No. 15 seed Pittsburgh, 4-0, in the first round Wednesday, while the Fighting Irish had a bye.
Miami won on the road April 10 at Notre Dame, 5-2, and also defeated the Fighting Irish in last year’s ACC Tournament quarterfinals, 4-2.
Ranked No. 36 in the nation, Notre Dame features a pair of All-ACC selections, in Second Team pick Quinn Gleason and Third Team choice Monica Robinson. Gleason and Robinson form the country’s 26th-ranked doubles pair.
The Hurricanes have two victories over Florida State this season, both at home. Miami won 5-0 Jan. 25 on ITA National Indoor Kick-Off Weekend and then defeated the Seminoles, 5-2, April 18. The Hurricanes are 3-1 all-time against Florida State in ACC Tournament, including a 4-1 win in the final in 2013 for the program’s first title.
The 73rd-ranked Seminoles have two All-ACC picks on the roster, in Third Team members No. 88 Danieka Borthwick and No. 116 Gabriella Castaneda.
The Hurricanes, who have made the ACC Tournament final in half their years in the conference, enter the field with two All-ACC selections. Eighth-ranked Stephanie Wagner, a junior, was named to the First Team, and No. 40 Sinead Lohan was tabbed as the ACC Freshman of the Year and a Second Team pick.
Miami’s match against either the Fighting Irish or the Seminoles will be Friday at 12:00 p.m. Live stats for all ACC Tournament matches can be found HERE.
