Canes Take on No. 8 Duke in ACC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After wrapping up the regular season Sunday against No. 4 Virginia, the University of Miami men’s tennis team has earned the No. 12 seed in the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Championship, which runs from Thursday, April 23 to Sunday, April 26, at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

The Canes will play No. 5 seed Duke on Thursday, April 23 at 12 p.m. in the opening round of action.

Duke is a familiar foe for the Canes. This will be the 29th meeting between the schools and Miami has a dominant 25-3 all-time record against the Blue Devils. Earlier in the season, Miami fell, 6-1, in a tough match to the Blue Devils in Durham, N.C. The No. 5-seeded Blue Devils enter the match ranked No. 8 nationally with a 21-5 record this season.

In singles play, No. 73 Piotr Lomacki and senior Wilfredo Gonzalez have led the way for the Canes with nine singles victories. Following closely behind are senior Henrique Tsukamoto and freshman Christian Langmo with eight wins. Rookie Langmo most recently defeated No. 4 Ryan Shane from Virginia, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Sophomore Bernard Tefel has secured six singles victories and freshman Niclas Genovese has five wins.

In doubles action, senior Gonzalez and freshman Kevin Bondar have led the way with nine victories. Tsukamoto and Lomacki also have eight wins this spring. Freshman Nile Clark has five doubles victories, three coming with fellow freshman Alexander Fahnehjelm, one with Andrew Harrington and the other with Langmo.

Action in the 2015 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship is set to start at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning and will conclude on Sunday, April 26 at 10 a.m. with the championship match.

A live video stream will be available on ESPN3 for the Saturday men’s semifinal that has the highest remaining seed and Sunday’s championship match, with Shawn Kenney handling play-by-play and Brian Clark adding analysis.
