CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis team could not contain No. 34 North Carolina State falling, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.

“It has been a difficult stretch for us,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “Our team is not playing with confidence after the losses, and the ACC conference is as strong as it has ever been. That’s a bad combination in this league.”

In doubles action, senior Henrique Tsukamoto and Piotr Lomacki teamed up but fell to Thomas Weigel and Simon Norenius, 8-2. Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and freshman Nile Clark battled in a competitive match but fell against Nick Horton and Robbie Mudge, 8-5, which clinched the doubles point for the Wolfpack.

Lone sophomore Bernard Tefel and freshman Christian Langmo were tied, 6-6, against Austin Powell and Beck Bond when the match was called.

In singles action, Langmo battled back in the second set but fell to No. 85 Austin Powell, 6-0, 6-4. Tsukamoto was overpowered in a tough match against Beck Bond, 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Gonzalez came out strong in the second set but fell to No. 92 Simon Norenius, 6-2, 6-4, which secured the victory for NC State.

Freshman Niclas Genovese could not develop a consistent rhythm against Thomas Weigel and fell, 6-1, 6-4. Fellow freshman No. 87 Lomacki went down in a tough straight-set match against No. 66 Robbie Mudge, 6-3, 7-5.

Sophomore Tefel won the first set but could not close out, falling in a tough three-set match against Nick Horton, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“We need to regroup and have a good a solid week of practice,” added head coach Rincon. “It will be good for our guys two play the last two conference matches at home to finish the regular season.”

The Canes will now return home to conclude the regular season against two top ACC opponents. The Canes will host No. 12 Virginia Tech on Friday at 2 p.m. and then will face-off against No. 4 Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Neill Schiff Tennis Center. Admission is free to all matches.
