Wimbley Sets UM Record at Florida Relays
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program had a record-setting day at the 2015 Pepsi Florida Relays.
One Hurricane set a school record on Friday at Percy Beard Track, while several Canes posted marks and times that rank among the best in school history.
Shakima Wimbley set a new school record in the women’s 400m, running a time of 51.50 seconds to place second overall. The sophomore vaulted past previous record holder Charlette Greggs’ time of 51.65 seconds set in 2003.
Jamika Glades was also a standout on Friday, running a personal-best time of 13.38 seconds to finish 11th in the 100m hurdles and a season-best time of 58.61 seconds to place 11th in the 400m hurdles. On the men’s side, Robert Grant ran a season-best time of 51.80 seconds to move into third place on Miami’s 400m hurdles list.
Taneisha Cordell ran a time of 2:08.58 to finish 16th overall in the women’s 800m, while Douglas Dourado and Sean Grossman ran season-best times of 3:59.65 and 4:00.39, respectively, in the men’s 1500m. Gabrielle Hesslau ran a personal-best time of 17:29.47 in the women’s 5000m to move into fifth place in UM history.
One of Miami’s relays earned a spot in the finals after a strong showing during Friday’s preliminaries. Miami’s men’s 4×400 relay of Josh Johnson, Grant, Joseph Ryan and Anthony Wolliston qualified for Saturday’s college final with a time of 3:10.83.
The Hurricanes also had a strong showing in the field events as Carlos Magnum placed eighth overall in the men’s invitational hammer throw with a mark of 60.74m and Precious Ogunleye placed seventh in the women’s invitational discus with a mark of 49.31m
Alysha Newman made her 2015 debut, placing fourth overall in the women’s pole vault with a mark of 4.00m.
Saturday’s track action begins at noon with the women’s sprint hurdles relay, while the field events open at 10 a.m. with the invitational portion of the women’s hammer. The SEC Network will have all the coverage for the collegiate competition Saturday.
